January 2008 and Worthing gained an unexpected out of season tourist attraction is the form of wood as far as you could see being washed-up on the beach.
The wood was part of more than 2,000 tonnes washed overboard from a 5,260-tonne timber cargo on the Greek-registered Ice Prince, which went down about 26 miles off Portland Bill in Dorset after being damaged in a storm.
Rescuers battled gale force winds and rough seas to remove the vessel's crew airlifting 12 and taking off another 8 by lifeboat before the ship finally sank with its remaining cargo.
The wood was washed-up along much of the Sussex & Kent coastline, but by far the most was dumped on Worthing's beach and featured in newspapers and on radio and TV news across the globe bringing an unexpected influx of day-trippers to the town!
